Jesus on the Holy Spirit

The most extensive teaching on the Holy Spirit is from the teaching of Jesus in John 14, 15, & 16.  Here are a summary of His words.

Jesus Teaching on the Holy Spirit
John 14
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
·       Holy Spirit comes to us at the asking of the Father
·       Holy Spirit is a Helper (another)
·       Holy Spirit is with us forever
·       Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth
·       Holy Spirit will not be received by the world
o   The world cannot see Him or know Him
·       Holy Spirit is knowable
·       Holy Spirit dwells with us
·       Holy Spirit dwells in us
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
·       Holy Spirit is the Helper
·       Holy Spirit is sent by the Father
·       Holy Spirit is sent to us in Jesus’ name
·       Holy Spirit is the teacher of all things
·       Holy Spirit brings to remembrance the Words of Jesus
Jesus Teaching on the Holy Spirit
John 15
John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
·       Holy Spirit is a Helper
·       Holy Spirit comes to us
·       Holy Spirit is sent by Jesus
o   In John 14, Jesus says the Father will send the Holy Spirit.  Is this a contradiction? No, Jesus and the Father are one.  There is unity in the Godhead. So…it is both.  The next phrase by Jesus affirms what was said in John 14 and John 15.
·       Holy Spirit is sent by Jesus from the Father.
o   This part affirms that who sends the Spirit is not a contradiction.
·       Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth.
·       Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father
o   This affirms the unity of the Godhead in the Trinity.
·       Holy Spirit bears witness about Jesus.
o   This is the ministry of Holy Spirit.
Jesus Teaching on the Holy Spirit
John 16
John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
·      Holy Spirit came because Jesus went to the Father.
·      Holy Spirit comes to us.
·      Holy Spirit is sent by Jesus.
·      Holy Spirit convicts the world concerning:
o   Righteousness – because Jesus went to the Father and he would be gone
o   Judgment – because the ruler of this world is judged.
o   Sin – because people do not believe
John 16:12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
·      Holy Spirit guides into all the truth.
o   Verse 13 must be connected to verse 12.  Because they were going to have a hard time dealing with all that Jesus was saying.  Holy Spirit would later guide them back into what Jesus had said and help them understand them.
·      Holy Spirit speaks not on His own authority.
·      Holy Spirit hears.
·      Holy Spirit speaks what he hears.
·      Holy Spirit declares the things that are to come.
·      Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus.
·      Holy Spirit takes what belongs to Jesus and declares it to us.
